We needed a place to sleep for 4-5 hours before an early morning flight and it did its job. It was cheap compared to other options in San Francisco. The room was small and modest but clean. There are no en-suite rooms, so you have to share the bathroom with others. The pink and green internal deco is a bit odd but passable for this price. There’s no lift, so you have to carry your bags upstairs to the 2-3 floor where the guest rooms are located. There are quite a lot of homeless people around in this area.

The price of the hotel was affordable, if you're travelling on a budget and need a place to stay, this is a great deal. Wi-Fi was included. It's located in the heart of a historically rich district filled with Hispanic culture; from food to other cultural influences. It's within walking distance to the renowned Valencia street and Mission Dolores Park. The location is definitely not lacking in excitement. Like a double edge sword, Union hotel is located on Mission street within the Mission district. You'll find that San Francisco is a relatively small city(about 49 square miles). The environment from street to street can change drastically. Mission street has its own identity or "vibe" compared to Valencia street. It's a particularly a rough area with people struggling with all types of ailments. While I wasn't there for long, I could imagine staying there long term would make someone uncomfortable. If you aren't accustom to rough environments, this may not be the place for you.

It was clean, a good location if you enjoy the mission district, staff was nice and they provided free coffee and a microwave. Shared bathrooms but ample clean bathrooms so it was never a problem. Also there was a sink in my room. The lights in the room were a very bright white light. I am light sensitive so I wore sunglasses or kept only my book reading light that I brought on after dark. Also there are lots of street people outside around it but that's the SF mission district these days for you. Also there are no refrigerators but that was to be expected.

The front desk man is nice. Flies on every floor, unclean rooms with stained bedding. Crude smell in hotel rooms, likely from streets below and consistently open windows.

Other than the block it’s on is the sketchiest one in San Francisco. if you need a no-frills, just a room to sleep and a place to stash your bags. This is the best joint 100 yards to the Bart station to/from the airport is perfect.

The staff was very friendly and kind, and that is the one good thing I will say about this place. The bed seemed unclean, the window did not lock, the walls were paper thin, and the room was extremely warm. I am a solo traveler and to be fair I did make it out alive, the bed was comfy enough and I did go nose blind to the distinct but undefined stench eventually. The shared bathroom was scary and I didn’t even entertain the idea of using the shower room. Also coming back during the night was a little frightening on account of the extremely rowdy homeless crowd and the smell of urine singed my nose hairs. No regrets but I also will never return.

There are unhoused people outside the front door 24 7. They are doing questionable things involving questionably legal substances. 7 days a week this is true but it's worse on the weekends. This was the scariest place ive ever stayed at in my life.
