Great location, good parking but not a great value. The sheets were stiff and pillows weren't comfortable.

The location is unbeatable — right on Main Avenue, steps from the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad, and walking distance to everything worth doing in town. The Victorian interior is stunning without feeling like a museum; antique furnishings, a classic two-person elevator, and beautifully appointed rooms with pillowtop beds and Egyptian cotton sheets. Breakfast is included and worth waking up for. Staff is knowledgeable, warm, and attentive. And the small touches — freshly baked cookies and coffee served every evening — are the kind of thing that turns a good stay into a memorable one. This is the rare historic hotel that delivers on its promise. If you want character, comfort, and a location you can't beat, the General Palmer is the easy choice in Durango.

Nathan and Amanda were wonderful at the front desk! Very helpful and responsive to anything we needed. Very sweet, loved having coffee in our floor and coffee with real china cups in the lobby.

Very friendly and helpful staff. It was so nice to be able to park at the hotel early in the day so we could visit the town and ride the train even though we weren't checking in until later that evening. Restaurants and shops are very close, everything is walkable. Our room was very nice and breakfast was great. We had a very enjoyable stay.

The hotel was wonderful. Impeccably maintained. Travis was so gracious and helpful. If he is an example of your staff as a whole — and I bet he is — you are in great shape!

This hotel BLEW ME AWAY! It's gorgeous, clean, staffed by lovely human beings, centrally located, historical, full of charm, and get this—they offer a free breakfast that is the best: eggs, sausage, muffins, oatmeal, cereals, breads/toast, and fresh coffee and tea 24/7!! The outside alone is worth a visit, but when you step inside it's like you've gone back in time to 1898, but with all the modern conveniences. It's also located right next to the historical & fun Durango > Silverton train depot from where the train going back & forth between those cities departs. TAKE IT! Just know you'll here the sound of the steam engine whistle every morning at about 8am-ish, again at 9am (departures), then once more w/ the return trains around 5:30pm & 6:30pm. I'm VERY sensitive to noise & thought it'd bother me, but nope, I LOVED IT. Made me feel like I was in the Old West & I actually looked forward to it. The hotel is in a PERFECT spot at the south end of town on the main strip (not loud, very quiet). This location enables you to just pop out of the hotel & walk up one side of the street as far as you want, then back down the other side. And along the way enjoy dozens of cafes, restaurants, stores, trinket shops, and specialty stores. I WISH I COULD MOVE TO DURANGO., GO! And stay at the General Palmer. We're going back! Shout out to AMAZING STAFFERS: Travis, Chandler, Caleb, Lucia, and Oxana. WE LOVE YOU GUYS! (Just 1 minor negative: no microwave, no fridge.) Rooms are AMAZING!

Staff good. Getting luggage car to room & room to car is horrible.

The main Hotel is very nice, however because we booked through Hotels.com our room was in an adjacent property and not in Main hotel. We were the only party not staying in the Main Hotel. Asked staff and was told they do not control the rooms choosen through Hotels.com, if we would have booked directly we could have stayed in Main hotel.

Everything was good.10 out of 10. Would recommend

I didn't look in the new wing, but I can see why other reviews say to stay only in the old hotel - the rooms are small and a bit odd, and I myself wouldn't stay in the ones without windows, but there's oodles of character, and in a good way. And while unusual, everything except the bathtub itself had been renovated nicely (and the tub - maybe 1960s - didn't need it, it's just old). The hotel itself is kind of cool with the old elevator, and the lounge/breakfast area is like a nice old comfortable Pullman car, very classy and very pleasant to sit in. And while the breakfast superficially wasn't really much more extensive than a chain breakfast - waffles, toast, yogurt, some fruit - just the setting and the fact it was nicely served and presented - makes all the difference. There's lots of shops and restaurants within a very short walk, the parking is great, and the railway is literally next door. We were only there one night, and I think it was the most expensive of several hotels on our trip. But I'd definitely go back, and hopefully for longer. Highly recommended!
